ABOUT US

Every culture carries a story.

Stories of ancestors, traditions, resilience, creativity, and a deep connection to the world around us.

At Honor The Tribes, we believe these stories are among humanity’s greatest treasures. In a rapidly changing world where ancient knowledge and traditions risk being forgotten, we feel a responsibility to listen, learn, and honor the people who continue to carry them forward.

Our art is inspired by living cultures, by the hands that create, the voices that share, and the communities that protect their heritage through generations. Each piece is more than an artwork; it is a tribute to identity, creativity, and the enduring spirit of the people behind the story.

Every collection begins with a human connection.
Every creation begins with respect.

Every artwork is a reminder that cultural heritage is not something from the past, it is alive, evolving, and carried by those who continue to share it with the world.

Through Honor The Tribes, we hope to create a bridge between cultures, inspire curiosity, and invite people to see the beauty of humanity through new eyes.

Our philosophy

We believe that culture is one of humanity's greatest works of art. Across the world, traditions continue to evolve. Some disappear quietly, while others survive through the people who carry them forward. Honor The Tribes exists to celebrate these living cultures through contemporary art. Not to preserve them in the past. But to honor them in the present. Every collection is created with respect for the communities that inspire it and with admiration for the beauty they continue to share with the world.

Our Vision

We dream of creating an evolving collection of art inspired by the world's living cultures.

Each journey becomes a new chapter.

Each collection tells a human story.

Each artwork is an invitation to see the beauty of a culture through different eyes.

Our Collection

  • Inspired by real people and genuine encounters.
  • Created through travel, research and relationships.
  • Artistic interpretations rather than documentary photography.
  • Shaped by local traditions, materials and craftsmanship.
  • Created together with local artists whenever possible.
  • Beginning with woven textile art.
  • Continuing with whatever artistic medium best tells the next story.

ABOUT THE FOUNDERS

Honor The Tribes is the story of two women whose lives have long been connected to Africa.

For Laura, Africa has been home for more than fifteen years. Living among its people and cultures transformed the way she sees beauty, not as something created, but as something deeply rooted in tradition, identity and everyday life.

Katja's connection began at birth. Born in Nairobi, she spent her early childhood in Kenya before returning years later to live in Ethiopia and Kenya. Working closely with local artisans, she witnessed not only extraordinary craftsmanship but also the stories, knowledge and traditions behind every handmade piece. During the COVID pandemic, when tourism disappeared and many artisans lost their livelihoods, she helped local makers connect with people around the world. Yet through those experiences, one realization became impossible to ignore. The true beauty was never the object itself. It was the people who created it. Their traditions. Their identity. Their stories.

Honor The Tribes was born from the desire to honor those stories through art. Not by speaking for the communities we meet. But by listening first. Creating together where possible. And transforming the beauty of living cultures into artworks that inspire appreciation, respect and connection for generations to come.

KATJA

Co-founder

Born in Nairobi, Kenya, Katja's connection with Africa began long before Honor The Tribes.

After spending her early childhood in Kenya, life eventually brought her back to East Africa, where she lived in Ethiopia and Kenya for several years. Working closely with local artisans and communities, she discovered that every handmade piece carried something far more valuable than craftsmanship alone—a story, a tradition and a cultural identity passed down through generations.

During the COVID pandemic, Katja helped local makers reach international audiences at a time when tourism had come to a standstill. Those experiences strengthened her belief that the true beauty of these communities lies not only in what they create, but in the people who continue to keep their traditions alive.

That belief became one of the foundations of Honor The Tribes.

LAURA

Co-founder

Originally from the United States, Laura has called Africa home for more than fifteen years.

Living across the continent has given her a deep appreciation for its people, cultures and extraordinary diversity. Rather than seeing Africa as a destination, she came to know it through everyday life, building lasting relationships with the communities around her.

With a creative background and a passion for storytelling through art, Laura believes that the world's greatest inspiration is found in people and the traditions they carry. Her vision is to create timeless artworks that honor these living cultures with respect, authenticity and beauty.

Together with Katja, she co-founded Honor The Tribes to celebrate the stories, identities and cultural heritage of the communities that continue to inspire them.
