Origins

Leather: Brown
Dimension: Small 91 x 152 cm 3 x 5''
Every symbol carries meaning.
Every tradition connects generations.
Handcrafted by Simenesh in Bazate Village, this leather wall hanging reflects the artistic traditions of the Ari people.
Using traditional burning techniques with steel and wooden tools, the surface of the leather becomes a canvas of symbols inspired by Ari body art. Each carefully created pattern represents more than decoration, it expresses identity, culture and a deep connection to community.
This artwork is a contemporary tribute to the people whose traditions continue to inspire new generations.

About the Ari Community
The Ari people are one of the largest communities in southern Ethiopia, where traditions continue to shape everyday life.
Creativity is woven into their culture. Homes are decorated with hand-painted murals made from natural pigments, pottery is crafted using techniques passed down through generations, and body art expresses identity, beauty and belonging. Jewellery, woven garments and handcrafted objects all reflect a deep connection to family, community and the land.
For the Ari, art is not separate from daily life, it is part of who they are.
This rich cultural heritage became the inspiration for the Ari Collection. Through contemporary artistic interpretation, we honor the beauty of their traditions and the people who continue to keep them alive.
Every tradition tells a story.
Every story deserves to be honored.
